In medical diagnostics and treatment as well as in life sciences, digital image processing reveals insights that cannot be seen by the human eye.

Different applications hold specific challenges for the imaging equipment: Chemical analyses based on artificial excitement of samples and subsequent observation of fluorescence effects require high camera sensitivity. On the other hand, the 2D or 3D analysis of gait, flight maneuvers, natatorial movements, and other motions of humans, animals, and plants can be performed best with cameras providing sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. Finally, the in-depth analysis of the oxygen saturation of tissue or the relative sugar and water content of natural raw materials calls for multi-spectral image captures.

With machines running at high speed, the visual inspection of processing steps, tooling, and motion paths of products with the naked eye is not an option. Especially when faulty parts and machine defects occur sporadically, troubleshooting may become a real challenge.

In such scenarios, high-speed video recording is ideally suited to capture movements of tools, products, and handling equipment. These camera systems enable quality managers and process engineers to find the root cause of quality and maintenance issues of manufacturing lines. Especially, when the users have little to no experience with video equipment, such systems must be easy to use.

In semiconductor manufacturing, manufacturers need to test their products in many places between bare wafers and packaged ICs to identify faults as quickly as possible. The lithography geometries shrink, so the inspection systems must be able to resolve defects at progressively deeper sub-micron scales.

Defects that may arise during the wavering, front-end or back-end / dicing process involve a high risk of disrupting the process chain, reducing yield and ultimately impacting customer satisfaction and cost. Such defects may occur due to air pollution in the vacuum chamber, pressure, uncleaned stencil, blistering by air pockets, and various other causes. Here are some examples of defects which must be detected at high speed: microparticles, layer thickness, internal cracks, deviations in the microstructures, and insufficient flatness.

In most applications, vehicles need to be identified by their license plate. Thus, Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR), is the primary purpose of such ITS. ANPRs hold various challenges for machine vision.
